Bird’s Tell Us

Join us to hear from Deborah Jensen PhD, the Executive Director of Audubon Washington as she shares insights on the work of our state National Audubon Society office and the 25 affiliated chapters across the state. Working together to conserve birds and the places they need in Washington State.  Audubon Washington’s current priorities are in coasts, especially Puget Sound, climate policy and smart energy siting, the shrub-steppe ecosystems of eastern Washington, and growing our programs at Seward Park Audubon Center to serve the diverse needs of the community through science, outdoor exploration, and education.

More than 500 species of birds have been observed in Washington State. The shorelines, estuaries and outer coasts, forests, shrub-steppe, and wetlands draw millions of breeding, migrating, and resting birds to Washington.  Birds are crucial components of healthy natural systems, serving as pollinators, predators, scavengers, seed dispersers, and engineers in riparian, wetland, and coastal habitats. Birds are indicators of broader ecosystem function and environmental health because they respond rapidly to climatic and other changes, and are relatively easy to see and study. Birds and humans need the same things – clean air, water, and land – so the future health of birds and that of humans is inextricably linked.
