Have you ever been surprised to see a mallard walking barefoot on ice or wonder how they can survive a swim in ice cold water? Or maybe you’ve been amazed (and grateful) seeing a 0.2- ounce Anna’s hummingbird buzz your feeder the morning after a below-freezing night. Well, it takes some Bird Smarts and the help of Mother Nature to survive! Chris Brewer will share which birds brave Whatcom County winters and reveal the unique biological systems and clever survival strategies they employ to do so. Things like how the chickadee’s brain actually grows to help it find the 100,000 tidbits of food that it stashed for a cold winter’s day and which bird’s digestive system literally changes to accommodate a winter diet. And what those fantastic feathers do! Most importantly, you’ll discover how you can more effectively support our Whatcom winter wildlife with some Audubon winter-feeding tips.
Chris is an NCAS Board member. She holds a BS in Environmental Studies from Huxley College of the Environment and is certified in Ecotherapy. She is teaching Nature as Therapy this year at Fairhaven College.
