Online Presentation
The mountains of Western Panama are a mixing pot for birds including migrants and residents. Central America is an active geological area, and the formation of the Isthmus has had a profound influence on the bird communities found throughout the Western Hemisphere. Thomas Bancroft, Ph.D. will describe to us more about this fascinating place. Be immersed in its sounds. Explore the gorgeous bird life, exotic flora, and take a quick trip through geologic history, all with a focus on understanding the evolution of some of our common North American birds.
Science advisor Thomas Bancroft is a writer-photographer focused on the natural world. His goal is to capture people’s imagination, encouraging them to think about life, nature, and the importance of protecting wild things. His Ph.D. is in ornithology, and he was the vice president of the research department at the Wilderness Society and Chief Scientist for National Audubon. He now lives in Seattle, where he serves on the board of Washington Ornithological Society and is chair of the Naturalist Group at the Mountaineers. He teaches birding courses for Eastside Audubon Society and the Mountaineers. Several scientific journals have published his studies, and Audubon, Birding Magazine, American Birds, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Maptia, Mountaineers, and WOS News have published his essays and photography.
